Abraham Lincoln’s letter to headmaster

A letter written by Abraham Lincoln to the Headmaster of a school in
which his son was studying. It contains an advice, which is still
relevant today for executives, workers, teachers, parents and
students.

Teach him that for every enemy there is a friend.

It will take time, I know; but teach him, if you can, that a dollar
earned is of far more value than five found.

Teach him to learn to lose and also enjoy the winning.

Steer him away from envy, if you can .

Teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Let him learn early that
bullies are easiest to lick.

Teach him if you can the wonder of books…but also give him quiet time
to ponder over the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the
sun, and flowers on the green hill-side.

In school teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat.

Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him
they are wrong.

Teach him to be gentle with gentle people and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone
is getting on the band wagon.

Teach him to listen to all men but teach him also to filter all he
hears on a screen of truth and take only the good that comes through.

Teach him if you can how to laugh when he is sad.

Teach him there is no shame in tears.

Teach him to scoff at cynics and be aware of too much sweetness.

Teach him to sell of his brawn and brain to the highest bidders; but
never put a price tag on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob…and to stand and fight if
he thinks he's right.

Treat him gently; but do not cuddle him because only the test of fire
makes fine steel .

Let him have the courage to be impatient, let him have the patience to
be brave.

Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself because then he will
always have sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order; but see what you can do…he is such a fine little
fellow, my son

Sicko - A must watch

Source: http://www.care2.com/c2c/groups/disc.html?gpp=11032&pst=749057&archival=&posts=6

Long time readers of this site no doubt know that I live in Texas. As everyone knows there’s no more conservative state in the Union than here. And I don’t just live in Texas; I live in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Dallas isn’t some pocket of hippy-dippy behavior. This isn’t Austin. Dallas is the sort of place where guys in cowboy hats still drive around in giant SUV’s with “W” stickers on the back windshield, global warming and Iraq be damned. It’s probably the only spot left in America where you stand a good chance of getting the crap kicked out of you for badmouthing the president.

So when I went to see Sicko for a second time this afternoon, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the audience. I wasn’t watching it downtown, where the city’s few elitist liberals congregate and drink expensive lattes. I went to a random mall in the mid-cities, where folks were likely to be just folks. As I sat down, right behind me entered an obligatory, cowboy hat wearing redneck in his 50s. He announced his presence by shouting across the theater in a thick Texas drawl to his already seated wife “you owe me fer seein this!”

Sicko started; the stereotypical Texas guy sat down behind me and never stopped talking. He talked through the entire movie… and I listened. The first ten to twenty minutes of the film he spent badmouthing Moore to his wife and snorting in disgust whenever MM went into one of his trademark monologues. But as the movie wore on his protestations became quieter, less enthusiastic. Somewhere along the way, maybe at the half way point, right before my ears, Sicko changed this man’s mind. By the forty-five minute mark, he, along with the rest of the audience were breaking into spontaneous applause. He stopped pooh-poohing the movie and started shouting out “hell yeah!” at the screen. It was as if the whole world had been flipped upside down. This is Texas, where people support the president and voting democratic is something only done by the terrorists. Michael Moore should be public enemy number one.

By the time the movie was over, public enemy number one had become George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy all rolled together. When the credits rolled the audience filed out and into the bathrooms. At the urinals, my redneck friend couldn’t stop talking about the film, and I kept listening. He struck up a conversation with a random black man in his 40s standing next to him, and soon everyone was peeing and talking about just how %#&!*% everything is.

I kept my distance, as we all finished and exited at the same time. Outside the restroom doors… the theater was in chaos. The entire Sicko audience had somehow formed an impromptu town hall meeting in front of the ladies room. I’ve never seen anything like it. This is Texas goddammit, not France or some liberal college campus. But here these people were, complete strangers from every walk of life talking excitedly about the movie. It was as if they simply couldn’t go home without doing something drastic about what they’d just seen. My redneck compadre and his new friend found their wives at the center of the group, while I lingered in the background waiting for my spouse to emerge.

The talk gradually centered around a core of 10 or 12 strangers in a cluster while the rest of us stood around them listening intently to this thing that seemed to be happening out of nowhere. The black gentleman engaged by my redneck in the restroom shouted for everyone’s attention. The conversation stopped instantly as all eyes in this group of 30 or 40 people were now on him. “If we just see this and do nothing about it,” he said, “then what’s the point? Something has to change.” There was silence, then the redneck’s wife started calling for email addresses. Suddenly everyone was scribbling down everyone else’s email, promising to get together and do something… though no one seemed to know quite what. It was as if I’d just stepped into the world’s most bizarre protest rally, except instead of hippies the group was comprised of men and women of every age, skin color, income, and walk of life coming together on something that had shaken them deeply, and to the core.

In all my thirty years on this earth, I have never ever seen any movie have this kind of unifying effect on people. It was like I was standing there, at the birth of a new political movement. Even after 9/11, there was never a reaction like this, at least not in Texas. If Sicko truly has this sort of power, then Michael Moore has done something beyond amazing. If it can change people, affect people like this in the conservative hotbed of Texas, then S…

NEW USE FOR VICKS

WOW! I was raised, and raised my kids with Vicks. How come I never knew this? I can't wait for my next cough.
Amazing! READ IT ALL. It works 100 percent of the time, although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why.

To stop nighttime coughing in child (or an adult, as we found out personally), put Vicks Vapor Rub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime and then cover with socks.

Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about five minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. This works 100 percent of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure.

I just happened to tune in to a.m. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs, so I listened. It was a surprising finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime and in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly. My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100 percent! She said it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her.. The coughing stopped in a few minutes, and believe me, this was a deep (incredibly annoying!), every few seconds, uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night she used it. If you have grandchildren, pass it on.

If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect .....

This is some news..

Bihar: Not allowed to cheat in exams, students go on rampage

Hundreds of law students in Bihar went on the rampage on Saturday
after being denied the use of unfair means in their law examination.

Angry students, appearing for LLB part III, went on the rampage in
Patna, Gaya and Sasaram districts, when they were not allowed to use
unfair means in the examination.

Official sources in the Education Department confirmed that students
in the exam centre at Jagjivan Ram College in Gaya, TPS College in
Patna and Sher Shah College in Sasaram, district headquarters of
Rohtas district, went on the rampage and boycotted the examination.

"After authorities deployed at the examination center, including
police officials, did not allow the students to carry books, copies
and mobile phones inside the exam hall, the students turned violent,
shouted slogans and boycotted the exam," a senior official of the
Education Department said on Saturday.

"It was a firm decision of the state government not to allow unfair
means in examinations" said Bihar Education Minister Brishen Patel.

In Sasaram, for the second consecutive day, students boycotted the law
exam. Some of the students fired in the air to create panic among the
college staff.

Later, they set the office and other classrooms in the college on
fire, damaged furniture and threatened the college staff of dire
consequence. Sources said that out of 344 students, only one girl
appeared in the examination on Saturday.

In Gaya, students demanded the right to use unfair means in the
examination on Saturday but were not allowed to do so by the local
administration.

"It led to a heated exchange between the students and administration
officials. Later, the students went on a rampage and damaged college
property," college sources said.In all three colleges, students
expected to be allowed to use unfair means as they had not attended a
single class and the syllabus had not been completed in time. "How can
we give the exams without using unfair means," was their angry query.

In Bihar, the use of unfair means in examinations is a rampant
practice. Not only students, parents also demand the right to use such
means during examinations.

Green Tip of the Day!!

To all those who do not TURN OFF their PC's before Leaving OFFICE - Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam

Most of us in the IT field, used to do one thing before leaving for the day from office,
Press Ctrl+Alt+ Del and leave to home happily. That means your PC is still on..

One normal PC in the sleeping mode (Hibernation) will consume 35 watts/hr.

Based on this we will do a small calculation.

For one week 24 * 7 = 168 Hrs
Of this if we consider that we are working for 68 hours, then

the PC is in sleeping mode for 100 Hrs a week. For one month 4 * 100 = 400 Hrs

In a normal IT office, if we assume approximately 250 PCs are there,

250 * 400 = 1,00,000 Hrs (Sleeping Mode)
So the power wasted in an office in a month is,
100000 * 35 = 3500 KWH or units.
If the charge per unit is Indian Rs. 6, then totally the wastage value is approximately 21000 Indian rupees.

Here the sad thing is not the money loss to the company but the power loss to the country. (Hope no company is bothered about this procedure of keeping the system in sleeping mode)

Apart from the loss to the country we need to think of the efforts people are putting for producing the power in the Mines, Thermal Stations, Hydro electric Stations, etc. If this is to continue, the cost of unit power will go up & at one stage we will not get power even if we are ready to pay any cost.
So before leaving to home take some time to shut down the PC and do some favour to the country and the organisation.

If you feel that this point is to be considered forward this to all your friends.
